Codling Moth

I have several apples and pear trees. Have been inundated with codling moth in last couple of years. I am reluctant to spray, and they are too big to spray effectively anyway. I have heard that planting lavender or nasturtium around them is a good way to fight the codling moth. Anyone had experience with these, or any other ideas?

  • Hi Maree: you can get pheromone traps, we got ours from pest management in Christchurch they do mail order. one trap is good for five or so trees. The traps attract and then trap on a sticky board the male codlin moth, they then do not fertilise the females eggs. they do not entirely eradicate codlin but in my experience they significantly reduce it.
  • Hi Maree,
Peter Bennett recommends in his book 'Organic Gardening' that you plant dahlias around or in close vicinity of your trees as they harbour earwigs and earwigs, according to Peter Bennett, eat the codlin moth larvae. I think worth a try.
I have never experienced pears being infected by codlin moth although my trees have had the pear slug in the past. They out grew it although I was recommended Neeme Oil as a spray for it. I hope this is of some help.
