I am wanting to put some vegetables into container bags for my daughter to take back with her to Uni after the holidays. What do I use to fill the bags up with? A mixture of garden soil and compost, container mix or vegetable mix. I tried asking at a garden centre and they wouldn't give me a straight answer. Also how much can you put in a container? I am using the Hanniex Containers, whilst there is a guidline on the inside of the bag I am not sure if that pertains to NZ or not?

Probably any of those would work but if you use compost and soil you might want to add a bit of pumice sand to help the mixture drain well. Vegetable mix would probably the easiest for your daughter to keep going for a while. The others would need ongoing feeding after the initial nutrients run out. Some liquid fertiliser concentrate would probably be the easiest for her, in that case.
Do you mean how much growing medium or how many plants per bag?
If plants it will vary according to the plant variety. I would consult a vege container gardening book from the library or, if you know what you are going to plant, post your list and I'll consult one of my books.
Lovely idea. Fresh healthy, economical homegrown food for your daughter.
