First time growing garlic & onions. When do I harvest ? They say garlic will turn brown but how much brown? Do I wait for tops to die back completely? Same for onions.

This is the BEST garlic website I've found. It's packed full of information on growing, harvesting and storing garlic. This is my garlic guru http://www.gourmetgarlicgardens.com/index.htm
There is very clear info about how garlic tops look when they are ready to harvest.
I could quote it but I recommend you visit the site-it's great.
Mel said-(Putting off harvesting garlic until after the leaves are completely brown will only result in a inedible bulb.")
I cant see how this could be,but i think leaving to long will result in a spreading bulb any way, but maybe it was referring to it inedible because of being left to long when starts to resprout, which is about May.
I googled as mine are turning brown too, so excited (first time ever growing garlic) and it says "Once the leaves get to be 1/2 – 2/3 brown, you should harvest the garlic regardless of size. Putting off harvesting garlic until after the leaves are completely brown will only result in a inedible bulb."
and to get it out of the sun asap and to be gentle as it bruises easily.
