How to keep the possums out???

The possums are eating up my veggies at night!  I hear that spraying rhubarb leaf tea on the veggies might help.

Any other ideas?  (besides a big fence and a shotgun)

  • This works belive it or not! Catch a possum (dead) and burn in fire pit. Use ash to sprinkle around boundary or your property and other possums will not enter.
  • Hi, if any of you have a possum and gorse problem one can help the other. Putting cut gorse around the area that you want protected with deter the possums. So if you put it around fruit trees the possums will stay away from the dried gorse
  • I was talking to a lady in my class today that lives out by the bush. She used to have problems with the possums eating her roses (of all things) but said that after planting Tansy they have had no more issues....apparently possums despise the smell.
I personally dont have problems with possums in my garden but have seen it mentioned on here before and couldnt wait to get home and share......from one ooooby to another.... Could be just the ticket! Good luck!
    • i have lots of tansy seed, or rooted cuttings if any body wants some. i have heard that it is a great fly repellant too.
    • Hi Isabell, I've just joined Ooooby so I'm not sure how it all works, but one of my biggest problems in the garden is possums, so I really want to try tansy. Do you still have any seed? I don't know the first thing about it so will have to do some research. Are the seeds readily available?
    • Woohoo, I know what Im getting this weekend! Thanks=)
  • Have tried smearing petroleum jelly round fruit tree trunks - guess the theory is that the sods hate getting stuff on their fur and stop off to clean up. I must have had ones with no personal hygiene, cos it wasn't effective.
Shotgun blast up tree beats biffing lumps of concrete (I can't hit a brick wall with a fried egg so they just laughed) only problem when possum wedged in tree dripping blood on you ! Guess Timms trap the answer.
And Pukekos break apple tree branches, too, Kali. Just as well no snakes and crocodiles, eh ?
  • I dont have any around here ,luckly, but i have heard of people burning the bodies of possums and spreading the ashes about and that keeps them away, that would only work if you had large numbers though.
  • ...well I guess there is a reason why 'Good' Magazine supports H1N1 after all!
    • ...oh what am i saying, it's 1080, not H1N1.
