Ivy In mulch

I offered for the local tree guy to dump some of his mulch at our house, thinking we'd get some free mulch, but little did I know it was going to be riddle with bits of Ivy :(
Now I don't really want to use that anywhere in my garden as I guess it will spread everywhere.

Is there anyway I could kill the Ivy to make that mulch usable? Maybe if I cover it with some tarp for a few months it will rot away?

  • Kind of defeats the purpose of getting some free mulch !

Well it doesn't really, its about finding a way to be able to use that free mulch with little cost,if your local tree guy has being mulching trees with lots of green vegetation there will be some nitrogen already in the heap which may or maybe not enough to create the heat needed,if not that nitrogen could be either in the form of animal manure or as urea, which at the end of the day is made up of 50/50 nitrogen/hydrogen,two of the most abundant elements in the universe.Urea is very cheap and can be brought from any farm fertilizer company
    • Cool.
Yeah there's lot of green stuff in there already, it's quite leafy.
I'll add chicken poo and look for some urea and let it sit for a few months...
  • If you buy some urea and mix it all up, the nitrogen in the urea will heat up the carbon and cook the ivy
    • Cheers. Can you get urea from garden shops?
