Have dug 4-5 roots of new potatoes growing in pretty well virgin ground - nothing planted in it for past 20 years - some of the spuds have a dark tunnel in them. One looked as tho a creature had emerged and left it's shed skin behind. I think it's potato moth and we've never had this problem before.
Questions
How to eradicate it please?
Where does it come from?
At what stage does the potato plant get attacked?

Each season i only seem to experience low levels of infestations on the foliage only and never on the tubers,so i'm happy that there seems to be a healthy balance within my garden,a severe infestation of any insect pest is sign of a imbalance between pest and predator.I'm fortunate to have enough space so i was able to plant areas surrounding the garden in whats called wild area-herb lay, this helps provide an environment for a healthy predator population in providing there food source through having wide range flowering plants, but for some i do understand that space limits being able to do this.
How does the moth actually attack the potato tubers, what does the damage look like? Apparently when the moths foliage food source nears exhaustion is when they move down the stem and attack the tubers
Hi Richard,
Sorry, seem to be pressing the wrong keys, Foliage looks OK, except there are some holes chewed into some of the stems and looks like tunnels going through them. How does the moth actually attack the potatoe tubers, what does the damage look like? Thanks.

Hi Jean,What i know about the potato moth is, one, its very early in the season for it yet and two, the larvae in there early stages tend to live mainly among the foliage, only in severe infestations that they will attack the tuber.Whats the being foliage like lately?
