Why graft fruit trees

I've been doing a lot of reading about grafting fruit trees, however so far there has been no real explanation as to why??

If you have a very good apple or pear for exaample why not just take a cutting to grow?? Surely this would grow as fast as anything grafted??

 Anyone have any ideas??

  • Oh, thanks for that! My other thoughts have been if I were to buy an heirloom/Heritage tree that has been grafted and how would I know about the root stock! I'm learning each day and I thank you for taking the time to reply!
  • In my 40 tree orchard there 10 apples, out of the ten only two are grafted, the rest are sucker, cutting and seedling grown, half of the 8 fruit and fruit really well,so i don't believe that they have to be grafted at all.

Where grafted trees come into there own is when they are put onto dwarf stock this really suits the small section owner
