Agee jars

I have a few Agee jars that are about jam jar size - mouth diameter about 68 mm, height about 110 mm. Unlike the other Agee jars that have the sort of screw top rim to take the Perfit ring and lid seals, these ones just have a thick rim. They don't seem to be designed to take the two part lids, nor are the wide mouths particularly good for cellophane covers. Does anyone know what sort of seal these jars are designed for? They're good sturdy jars and I'd like to use them if I can find an appropriate lid.

Hi, These are jam jars and are designed to let your jam go cold and then add a wax disc to go over it, then you place celophane, plastic or cloth over the lip of the jar and tie with a ribbon or string. The plastic discs you get today are far too small to go over, you'll have to adapt and make some of your own. Arthur Holmes in Wellington sells the wax that you need.

  • I've never tried using them in a water bath - wouldn't expect the plastic covers to create a proper vacuum. Don't know whether the plastic tops are readily available any more, I inherited mine from a friend's elderly mum and the friend is well into her 60's. I only remember seeing that type of jar sealed with cellophane covers. Loved the sound when I popped them open to break the vacuum and my brothers used to drum on them :). The plastic tops only went on after the cellophane was removed (probably because clumsy little fingers had torn it).
  • Yes, that looks like some of the ones I have. I also have some in that jam jar size with Agee in big square letters with a more pronounced "neck". The impression I get when trying to put cellophane covers on them (due to the rubber bands pinging across the room ;) is that they're not really designed for that purpose, so I was wondering what sort of seals where used on them originally. Those flexible plastic tops look good, but I presume they wouldn't be suitable for water bath preserving?
  • Here's a picture of the agee jars that I have with their cover. Are yours the same type? The K-B cellophane covers that are available from most supermarkets fit this jar.

  • Hi there, can you post a photo of your jars? I have some at home that sound similar which have a rolled rim and have always used them with cellophane covers and rubber bands. I also have some flexible rubbery/plastic tops that fit them. I mainly use them for pickles and chutneys with melted preserving wax on the top but have also used them for jams etc so long as I eat the jam promptly. Will dig them out and load a photo.
