Cardboard in the garden

A friend suggested that I use cardboard in my garden. After explaining how she does this I thought I would bring it here.
We live in a high desert area in Colorado, but it sounds like it would work.
She hates to weed. It makes her hurt due to a health condition. So she is taking cardboard and laying it down where she wants her bed to be. Then she uses a sharp box cutter to make a square about three inches in diameter. Plants her seed or transplant there. She uses square foot measuring for her spacing and then puts a mulch over the cardboard to reduce the ugly. The cardboard decomposes in place or can be composted. Next year new cardboard.
Any thoughts?

  • hi margret , its a great way of keeping weeds suppressed but you will have to take any perennial weeds out first , or they will just bust thru .. it will also help with soil temperatures , enabling you to sow earlier in the season

    warm regards
