Re your digging up your lawn - I'm with you all the way - do whatever you need to get what you want - and it's often possible to do it without using poisons, but still without major amounts of additional work. I started a new garden this winter by covering the kikuyu with waste - kitchen scraps, and vege and flower garden carbon and green materials. I've just started scraping the top layer of the resulting compost off, and will plant corn seed in the next few days. Like yours, my husband looked askance at it at first - in fact for several months, since it was 'cold' rather than 'hot' composting and definitely didn't look attractive. However, last week he boxed it in, and now I've scraped it, it's starting to look like a real raised bed, and he's delighted with the result.
