Storing potatoes

My first crop of potatoes are ready for the picking. What is the best way of storing these beauties? In the past I've put my potatoes in a box in the shed but they almost always goes rotten or start growing again!

  • Wel harvested the 1st lot of potatoes last weekend, left them under a roof for two days outside to dry, dusted them off and packed into brown paper bags. Will see how they keep. I got a wheelbarrow load from 2 bags seed potatoes which apparently is not too bad. Bring on Xmas lunch the potatoes and mint are waiting :o)
  • Hi, i grow about 300kg of 15 heirloom and some new imported TPS grown variates,i find that this amount gets us(family of 5) through to the early new season spuds if we eat the poorer keepers first. The last ones to be eaten is Moie moie, even now has only a short stem, though well and truly past there best are still better than the tasteless supermarket one.
  • I keep my potatoes in a terracotta pot with a flat thick wooden board on top! Oterhwise a thick brown paper bag.. They seem to do ok, Oh yes, then I place them in a dark cupboard!
I thought the new potatoes skins all rubbed off easy, well thats often how we prepare them! just rub off skin and cook! nice with fresh mint!

Hi Jeffie. We are having trouble keeping the potatoes long enough to last us until the early's are ready. We check all potatoes for disease or bugs before we store them in banana boxes in the dark in the stables. This autumn we will try dividing each layer of potatoes with a wad of newspaper so more air can circulate. Keep them in the dark. Rub as much soil off as possible, don't wash. Can't do much about the sprouts other than take them off when you go to use them. For your seed potatoes, when do you put them out for chitting? K

  • Make sure you are selecting potatoes without cracks and blemishes too...
    This helps.
  • Thanks, I have done a lot of work in there and nothing more rewarding than harvesting your crops ;o) I tried buying the ones that said good storing. But I've just been chatting to a old fella here in town and he said if the skin rubs off they are def not ready. Said I should leave the potatoes in untill the tops COMPLETELY dry off, dry them in the sun for a day, pack in paper bags unwashed. But tops have to be dead brown and dry. So I have to wait. i'll dig as I need them but main crop later this year. Bugger. Like my partner always tell me I'm killing my veggies with kindness as I am just not patient enough!

in the next few weeks he is showing me what to do with my kumeras. Keep you posted!
  • wow your patch looks great. Thanks for the photo. Hope you get some good spuds. You can just dig a few up, leave them to dry for a few hours and eat them as you need them until the skins toughen a bit. Reading the back of the seed packets when I bought them there are some varieties that don't keep too well anyway.
  • Hi, I've planted them on 2nd of August in my garden. I've done a lot of work with the soil and dug in bags of horse poos beginning of this year and continuously dig in clippings from the garden and anything from the kitchen. Tops are currently dying back and they are nice size potatoes, fit in the palm of your hand. I will upload a photo herewith. In the back you can see the 1st potato crop. Planted another crop in September which is now knee high and next to that first time peanuts.
Check the potatoes in question last night and noticed the skin can rub off easily. Apparently to info on the net this means they can be picked but will not keep for long so Im prob best to leave them in the ground for another few weeks. I'm not sure. Maybe this is why previous crops did not keep well.
