Find out about gardening, cooking and related training - mostly in Hamilton & Tokoroa, Waikato, NZ - including workshops and demonstrations run by WIC. 

Over the coming months WIC is looking at running a range of workshops including:

* Growing vegetables from seed and container gardening
* Basic garden design
* Basic gardening skills
* Get Cooking! Healthy cooking techniques for what you grow.

Scything Workshop with the Jolly Scythers


(Part of "Sustainable September" in Raglan)

When: Sunday, 23 September 2012. 8:30am to 1pm
At Te Mauri Tau.

Learn the art of scything. Replace your noisy, smelly lawn mower and get more exercise. Enjoy hearing birdsong, the smell of the grass, the satisfaction and have fun. The cost is $65 ($30 can be applied to purchase of equipment).

Learn English for Free

Most of the info we provide is in English, which is a problem for some of us.  If you or your friends struggle to read or talk in English, the free English language class for people with English as a second language starting this Friday 8am - 5pm at WINTEC may help.  Contact: Elmarie Karg ph (07) 838 2450 www.wie.ac.nz

Reminder: Weed Control Workshop

At this free WIC workshop learn:

  • how to beat the weeds using healthy organic methods such as mulch
  • which weeds are the worst
  • which weeds are useful
  • what tools to use.

When: Friday 28 September: 10 am and 2 pm - the afternoon session is a repeat of the morning session.

Garden Pest Control

Are you wondering like Lucy how to stop your brassicas getting eaten by green caterpillars? Do you wonder where the slugs and snails hide out during the day? Are there insects sucking the life out of your plants? Then the free WIC Garden Pest Control workshop is for you! 

The WIC Community Garden Mentors will be teaching you how to control pests using approved organic methods.

When: We will be running the hands-on workshop at lest 3 times: 

  • Wednesday 3 October 10-11 am
  • Friday 5 October 6-7 pm (To be confirmed)
  • Wednesday 10 October 10-11 am.

FREE Healthy Cooking Classes

Experienced cooking tutors Stephanie (Taiwan) and Soti (Iran/Cyprus) will be taking turns teaching healthy cooking classes every  Saturday, 10 am - 12 noon at the Waikato Migrant Resource Centre in Boundary Road, Hamilton.  

Everyone is welcome!  Just turn up, no bookings required.

At this Saturday's (29th) Healthy Cooking Class at the Waikato Migrant Centre, Soti will be teaching you how to make a healthy version of KFC! (see above for details).

Growing Kumara (sweet potato)

WIC is running a free kumara growing workshop tomorrow, Saturday 27 October, 2-3:30 pm.   Three experienced growers will share their knowledge of planting, growing and harvesting kumara:

  • Beatriz Hardy - South American information about camote and the Wintec Horticulture school's experience of growing kumara in the Kitchen Garden, Hamilton Gardens 
  • Wiremu Puke - a Maori perspective on kumara growing, experience of growing kumara in the Te Parapara Garden, Hamilton Gardens 
  • Lisiate Manuatu - a Tongan gardener who has been experimenting with growing kumara in NZ for over 40 years.  He grows enough to feed his family all year round - this year he plans to grow 1000 plants in his back yard - come and learn how to make the best of a your space!

Everyone is welcome to come and learn and share your experience!  If you need a translator, please let us know as soon as possible.   

Bring: hat/sunscreen, raincoat and any seeds or plants you'd like to swap or share.

How to Cook Tofu and Taiwanese Crispy Salty-Peppery Chicken

Stephanie will be running her popular hands-on class on Saturday 15 December 2012, 10 am - 12 noon at the Waikato Migrant Resource Centre in Boundary Road.

The following free sessions will be held at the Grandview Community Garden over the next few months - everyone is welcome to come along and learn! 

As we will not be sending out the WIC Gardening Update for a few weeks over the Christmas - New Year period, you may want to put these dates on your calendar:

 

  • Thursday Dec 27, 9 am - 10.30 am, repeated Saturday Dec 29, 9 am - 11 am - Sow summer vegetables - plant a second crop of zucchini, cucumbers beans and tomatoes
  • Wednesday Jan 2, 9 am - 10.30 am, repeated  Saturday Jan 5, 9 am - 11 am Seed saving in the garden: new plants for free
  • Monday Jan 7 (To be confirmed - this date may change), 9 am - 10.30 am, repeated Saturday Jan 12, 9 am - 10.30 am - Growing healthy tomatoes
  • Tuesday Jan 15, 9am - 10.30am, repeated  Saturday Jan 19, 9 am - 11 am - Pest control - beetles and bugs
  • Monday Jan 21, 9 am - 10.30 am, repeated Saturday Jan 26, 9 am - 11 am - Water wise gardening
  • Tuesday Jan 29, repeated Saturday Feb 2 - Sowing autumn vegetables in the shade house- leeks, broccoli, onions, spinach.
