City Rooftop Food Gardens

City Rooftop Food Gardens

We want to establish food gardens on the rooftops of inner city buildings so that inner city dwellers can grow their own fresh, healthy produce, form connections with their neighbours, and make a positive contribution to the urban environment.

Urban Pantry - Rooftop Gardens for Growing Communities

The inspiration behind the Urban Pantry rooftop food gardens project is set out in Emily's entry for the Happyzine Dream to Reality competition. Emily posts fortnightly progress updates on Happyzine. You can keep up with the latest news by joining the group on Facebook.

Next Monday I'm having a video filmed about the rooftop community food gardens venture I've started. It's for an upcoming ad campaign by a big corporate which is getting behind the venture. We're hoping to convey a community feel in the video and are looking for a family or families to be involved in the video. It would be for a couple of hours next Monday in Auckland CBD. Send me a message if you're interested - might be a good way to entertain the kids for a small part of their holidays!

Hi Emily, great idea! I think there is a growing need (no pun intended!) for this in New Zealand and throughout the world! I like Green on Top as a name, but I'm sure one will stand out and grab your attention. If I think of anything creative I'll let you know! Julia

Thanks Kelly! Don't worry, I will be very careful with the engineering side of things, because damaging someone's roof won't help me to get more people on board!

Incidentally, if anyone knows a structural engineer with a green bent, please let me know.

Very exciting! But make sure you check out the engineering, etc of the building - large amounts of soil can be very heavy!

I like the names that reference the rooftop aspect of it - Green on Top, Growing on Top, Food from Above - definitely attention grabbing and descriptive.
