Hi everyone. Can anyone help with when to plant Blueberry plants? I notice they are still at the nuseries but when is the right time? My daughter just loves them!

  • thanks for the website Christy - what a fantastic site!
  • my (american) book says that they will do ok in containers and you should plant with a potting mix formulated for acidic plants but i don't know if you can get that in nz? I planted mine with peat. If they were varieties from Incredible Edibles they have been helpful with advice for me in the past. Their website is www.edible.co.nz

thanks Christy. Went to a local nusery as they had a sale on them and bought three varieties, all different and ones that fruit early and mid/late?... hoping they will work. As for an acidic soil - I'm planting these into half wine barrels which have some plants in but they will need topping up with soil - any ideas as to what I should buy - just a container mix?

you could plant anytime, as long as you keep them well watered if it is dry. they like an acidic soil, so you may need to do some prep work to create the right conditions. also buy two different varieties to improve fruit set and size. i also picked off the flowers the first year they were in, which everyone complained about but i read somewhere better in the long run....
  • The biggest set back with blue berrys is they brake off easy so be sure to plant them where there is little or no foot traffic, I planted a blueberry hedge in my front yard the frist week we moved in, a year ago and they are smallier now then when I planted them as the neighbours kids cut trough my corner so when I can aford it i'm going to frame the hedge with a picket fence, I think the berrys will look wild growing through the pickets.
