Compost

A few months ago, I cleaned out the fireplace in anticipation of winter. I dumped a bucket or two of ashes in the compost bin. Not long after that I realised that some treated wood was probably burned in there. Not a lot, but we burned mostly pine slab last year as we were broke and needed cheap wood! It was supposed to be untreated, but I don't think that was entirely true. Anyway... I'm thinking I should probably err on the side of caution and not use that compost on any edibles, but am I being too paranoid and it wasn't enough to matter, or am I being not cautious enough and should get rid of the lot? (Argh, I hope not... So many goodies went into that bin!) Moral of the story... Now I'm a lot more careful about what I put into my new heap!

    Thanks Robbie.

I would say use the compost on decorative plants, but make sure they're not acid loving plants. Wood ash is supposedly very alkaline (+- 15% calcium) and a couple of bucket fulls is quite a large amount.
