Growing veges is a lot of fun and very rewarding. However you need to be careful that you dont get into a frame of mind that you can make things grow faster or bigger than nature determines. A good garden that provides quality veges for consumption should be based around sound principles of soil management. Build up the garden with compost, preferable homemade with materials such as leaves that you can source from other places to supplement what you can put in. You can also add various fertilisers and homemade additives such as comfrey and/or worm tea. Fertilisers purchased from a garden centre are essential to maintain the mineral levels of the soil but you cant add more than recommended quantities to make plants grow faster. Practising a degree of plant rotation is also important. For example tomatoes should not grown in the same place more than two years in a row.
purchase a worm farm and water your veges with worm tea its a great fertiliser, also comphrey & seaweed are good fertisliser depending on what your garden is deficient in.
Try sheep nuggets. I soak them in a bucket of water to make a sloppy mixture, and water this around my leafy greens. I have had phenomenal success with pak choi! You can almost see it growing! (Tasty, too!!) I think it acts as a bit of a slug and snail deterrent too. Bonus!
