the vegetable and herb expert by dr.d.g.hessayon (fantastic book) says for onions , when bulb mature foliage turns yellow and topples over. leave for about 2 weeks and carefully lift with fork on dry day.
onions not for immediate use must be dried. spread out the bulbs on sacks or in trays - out doors if weather is warm, indoors if wet.
drying will take about 7-21 days depending on size, depending on size.
inspect bulbs -all soft ,spotted and thick necked onions should be set asside for kitchen use or freezing .
exceptions are the japanese varieties which are not suitable for storage.
store in trays , net bags , tights or tie to a length of cord as onion ropes. choose a cool well lit spot -will keep till late spring.

My reading last night (after I had dug up my brown onions) said they can stay in the ground but they dont want excessive moisture on them so get them out before autumn. To store, wash and dry - plait their long leaves and hang.
