  • Yes you can.   Check out Irish chef Denis Cotter's book Wild Garlic, Gooseberries ... and Me (Collins, 2007)- see the chapter on foraging. Hamilton City Libraries holds it.  (Cotter even spent some time living in NZ).

BTW there is a Foragers & Gatherers list on Ooooby which is quite good for these sort of questions.

Also the Wellington based Wild Picnic blog by Johanna Knox - see the Onionweed entry with photo.  She used to do a foraging show on NZ National Radio's This Way Up, you can listen online or download a podcast on onion weed which includes recipes.

She often uses them in place of spring onions, and recommends them in Asian recipes.

It might be worth checking out Gwen Skinner's Simply Living book, a classic featuring foods that can be foraged in NZ.

Also the recently published Find It Eat It - cooking foraged food gathered around new Zealand by Michael Daly - again, Hamilton City Libraries holds it though I've get to get my hands on a copy.

I'd be interested to hear if you come up with any favourite recipes!

    • Fantastic reply thanks! I will start by gathering it for soups & salads.
