Ooooby Market Stall

Following on from Helen's post about the Green Valley Grocer in Slaithwaite I wonder if we should reconsider the Ooooby Market Stall in Meltham? As Slaithwaite and Meltham are neighbouring villages it seems like it might be a bit of an overkill in a small area and perhaps we should be supporting a community project that is already in place. The Huddersfield Group covers a large area so maybe the Ooooby Market Stall could be done somewhere on the North side of Huddersfield where it would be supported by people that possibly wouldn't go out as far as Slaithwaite in the South-West. What do other people think?

  • Hi both
In some ways I think it will do the grocers no harm and will help to promote the whole food growing agenda amongst people local to the Colne Valley. On the other hand, if there are interested people in other parts of Huddersfield it would be good to spread the access so to speak. (New girl sitting on the fence ......)
If anyone who has produce for the Oooby market has a spare, the person to talk to at GVG is Carol Wood who is the shop manager, or to me and I can liaise with her.
BTW if Mirfield is part of your area, there is a fantastic gardening project at Shepley Bridge Marina put together by the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme people and their young people with the help of the River Colne Project. may be out of area, but worth noting nonetheless.
  • True. I'm happy to put this on the agenda for Tuesday night.
  • That is definately a possibility and a sensible arrangement, I would think, to ensure all items of veg find a home.

However I still wonder whether Meltham is a good location for a market stall in relation to the current Ooooby Huddersfield Group members? Whilst it is reasonably accessible to myself and Alex (living on the South side of Hudds), I'm not sure whether other members of the group would actively go out as far as Meltham. I'm not sure where people live but my impression is that many of them are in reasonable proximity to Deighton and Meltham is quite a way out of the other side of town? Obviously that is for everyone to answer individually so we can see if there would be enough support.

I'm sure the idea is to build up support for the Market stall in the local area but I guess we would need enough support from current Ooooby people at the beginning to a) contribute to the stall and b) promote the stall. If that is the case the location needs to be convenient to the majority of intersted parties.
  • Good point. My sense has been to go where the interest and opportunities present themselves. Whilst it makes sense to space out the initiatives, I wonder if there is another way than to resist the sprouting of two initiatives side by side if that were to occur?

What if the Swan Inn weekend market were to recruit growers in their neighbourhood and for trade on the Saturday and then whatever produce was left over to be taken to the Slaithwaite store for sale through the week? Could that strengthen both initiatives?
