Impacted crop?

Our chook called Fridge seems in great discomfort. I noticed this morning (at feeding time) that her crop is incredibly full and she making some strange neck and head movements as if she's stretching.

I'm wondering if I should pop her in isolation, just with water for a half a day or full day to see if she can work this out without being tempted to eat more.

I suspect she is the lowest in the pecking order and is also the chook who has occasional diarrhea. She has had trouble with her laying - eggs with no shells, irregular laying etc.

I feed the chooks layers mash, they have oyster shell grit, fresh greens and plenty of water daily.

Any advice gratefully received.

  • Glad youve got it sorted. I was aobut to post feeding her bread soaked in olive oil will help. :) Tomorrow if its down and settled give her some yoghurt to help settle her gut.
I would also feed the poor girl sperate from the others for a wee while, if shes bottom of the order, altho it seems odd that shes laying funny shells as bottom of the order chooks normally full up on grit.
    • Hey Mel,
I ended up taking Fridge to the vet but he didn't really have any new information for me. I tried her on bread soak in oil this evening and have been giving her a bit of yoghurt mixed with her antibiotics, oil and a smattering of mash in the mornings. She's drinking, pooing and laid an egg today. She's still in solitary and hopefully will improve.
    • Thanks for the advice - I'll try her on the bread and oil later. Her crop is really huge. I hope I don't have to take her to the vet.

She's in a crate by herself at the moment and is drinking heaps of water. It's not sorted yet but hopefully she'll be ok by tomorrow. I've got some yoghurt on the brew too, so will give her some of that tonight.

That's interesting about the bottom of the rung chooks eating more grit - she's a mystery this bird!
  • I've fed Fridge rice bran oil with a syringe, she sat on my knee for a bit and is now in isolation with a bowl of water with garlic and more oil. I'll try to give her a crop-rub and more oil in a wee while.
