I have chilli seed, I'm told , from Peru. It will grow just over half a metre and can be used as a hedge. It is a perennial. It needs a warm climate.

Thanks Hester, I will see if anything turns up in this area; otherwise I will get back to you. Thanks, Matt

Thanks Janet, very interesting; I was under the impression that the Bocking 14 was an improved medicinal version, but perhaps not. I will look into it a bit more.

I could send you some comfrey roots but you will probably be able to find some closer to home.Let me know if you don't.

I think I've got Bocking 14. I've had my stock for years but I think I originally got Bocking 14. It certainly doesn't set seed and is vigorous. Doesn't spread really fast tho'-not unless it's dug up. Every little piece of root will grow.

This is the other piece of info from that site:
"The Bocking 14 cultivar of Russian Comfrey (Symphytum x uplandicum) is a sterile hybrid that will not self-seed and is extremely robust and vigorous. The true comfrey (Symphytum officinalis) is a bit less vigorous of a grower, has more elongated leaves and (I think) prettier flowers, and does indeed make seed."

Hi Matt - I've just googled Russian comfrey to see what it is - and found this on
"Although both types of comfrey (Russian and True) are useful for making medicine and making compost, in an ideal world one would use the bocking cultivar for producing large amounts of biomass for permaculture gardens, composting, and animal feed, and one would use the true comfrey (Symphytum officinalis) for medicinal purposes. Again, both types (and other species as well) are used interchangeably in agriculture and in medicine."
I now wonder what I am growing, which has never set seed - do you - or does anyone - know what most of us are growing in NZ?

Hi all, I'm trying to source a few Hard (Clinker) Beech native tree seedlings to reintroduce to our little part of the Coromandel. They used to grow with the Kauri there (apparently).

I'm also after the herbs 'Cow Parsley' and 'Russian Comfrey' (Bocking 14); either seed or plants would be great.

Or advice on where to get any of these.

Hi, have just discovered this group - hooray Does anyone have any of their own onion seed we could beg, borrow, buy please? We're finding that a lot of commercial seeds are simply not growing, or growing weak plants.

hi Angie if you are ever going down state highway one and passing through Taihape I have raspberries and boysenberries going crazy. I am not sure about the protocol for exchanging addresses but if you are interested I am happy to post my email address.
