Suggestions for apples

So far, apple sauce, apple jelly and drying apples and I can freeze some

I also have a load of pears as well to deal with.

Any other ideas, something a little different would be good.

  • Try apple and mint jelly its yum on lamb, there is a basic reciepe in the good old Edmonds cook book.
  • Dried apples are so good!
  • While in the US a number of years ago, I came across "apple butter".
It is made by reducing apples by boiling, adding sugar and cinamon, so is thicker than apple sauce, and a red colour.Delicious on toast.
    • thanks, due to recent events in chch the apples are still sat there (forgotten until now), I really must get round  to doing something with them ASAP I don't want them to go to waste. It sounds like the quince paste I made - Membrillo. I didn't know you could do the same with apples, will definitely give it a try.
    • Hi Moggy, I've never heard of Quince Paste "Membrillo". Now I have something new to check out and try out. Thanks for sharing that.

I grew-up eating apple butter and a few years ago I was visiting a kitchen store and foundPumpkin Butter with Port Wine. I bought a few for Christmas presents (and myself) and when I tried it I went nuts over it. I now buy 3 large sweet cooking pumpkins in the fall just to make my winter pumpkin butter, which has a huge Christmas following and makes gift giving so much easier for me. Pumpkin butter and a loaf of homemade bread. The Port Wine really is the secret and it makes it taste so good!

I was so sad to hear about what has happened in Chruchchrist. Your in my prayers.

    • thanks for you thoughts, where we are, we are OK,a hell of a shake, but fairly unscathed.

I hadnt heard of quince paste before I moved to NZ as the only quinces there are in England are the small hard chinese quinces.

If you are going to make quince paste, when you peel the quinces, do not put them in water, you need the oxidisation in order for it to turn the nice dark rd colour

  • Lucky you! YUM!

You might like to try making apple butter or apple Chutney. Try baking and freezing up apple bread, apple muffins, apple coffee cake, they make wonderful quick gifts.

Pre-make and freeze apple waffles so you can just heat them in the toaster in the morning. My Mom did this for us kids while we were growing up and it sure make mornings easier on her too!

There's apple muffins, apple cider & baked apples.

I like to pre-make and can (Preserving) up apples for pies. By doing this I'm always ready to make a quick pie or just heat & pour some over pancakes, waffles, pour into a bowl and add yogurt or ice cream.
