I ve started to soak some seeds just to clean them down, and sort out the redundant seeds, but i would like to know at what temperature and for how long and the best way to dry them as it is quite humid here in chch at the moment and i'm a little tentative of sticking them in the oven! I don't want them to go moldy over winter.

  • I have just been reading the posts about seed saving - with regards to tomatoes there are lots of examples on You Tube - try this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_Yncr8rTfc
  • Hi George Just air dry them somewhere where there's a bit of a breeze for a about a week so.
You don't need to ferment zucchini/ pumpkin seeds as the same as tomatoes but to soak long enough to remove the slippery coating, that's if you want them looking like what you would buy in packet seed, other than that if the seed is just for yourself just dry them straight out of the zucchini/pumpkin
    • I have tried the dry out by them selves method a few times works ok if relatively clean of organic coating- for pumpkins. How ever zucchini have alot of non viable seed and lots and lots of slim so have used soaking. I don't think i'm going to use a few hundred seeds maybe 40 so i want them clean for re distribution and maybe to keep for a few years. do you know the rational behind the fermentation process for toms as they are next on my list.

I will try the breezy drying process as they have been going a little fluffy around the edges moldy.
  • Hi George, you don't have to get the seeds completely clean, just spread them out so they're all separate, and lay them in a single layer on paper towels or tissues to dry - on a window sill, warm table, etc until they feel light and hard, then store in a labeled envelope, in a dry place, till spring
    • I am having problems with the cleanliness of my seed as it goes moldy within days of leaving out to dry perhaps i need to dry them more as i don't have paper towels, its always the little things in this process that i over look....
