Tell us about your garden and what you're growing

I try to grow as much as I can seasonally so the garden is always changing and also have a small organic seedling business growing edibles. At the moment I've got my spring garden blooming with corn, pumpkins (Jap, Butternut, Jarrahdale and Marina di Chioggia), cucumber (standard and lebanese), zucchini, mizuna, tatsoi, sweet potato, strawberries, chives, shallots, tomato, cherri tomato, eggplant, capsicum, lots of different lettuces, watermelon, silverbeet, beetroot, climbing beans (Blue Lake and Purple King), bush beans (Sunray, Cherokee wax, Tongue of fire), Cape Gooseberry, pineapple, Warragil Greens, chilli, bay tree, avocado, mango, tangelo, lemonade, organges, limes, lemon, grapefruit, taro and papaya. I also try to grow a wide variety of herbs including curry plant, lavender, rosemary, thyme, lemon thyme, lemon grass, parsley, basil, dill, comfrey, borage and aloe vera.

  • Thanks for your help
  • thanks for the links.
I've printed myself out a planting guide and had a quick look at the Green Harvest site, some very interesting seeds here, I will definitely use them to buy my seeds I think, will have a really good look when I get home.
There is more satifaction from growing from seeds I think, at least you know exactly what your planting :)
  • Thanks Katherine :) I need to get myself a planting guide as I still struggle remembering what months belong to what season. I must admit I have been buying seedlings and going by what I have seen available, I too love peas but haven't seen any around. I have only just got the veggie garden built, and thought it a bit late to be planting winter veg, but there is always something that will go in. Also as I know we will be going away for three weeks, I have been holding back a bit with the planting as the garden will have to fend for itself while I am away. I tried growing some cauliflower last year with little success, tiny little very open heads, maybe it was the wrong time of year or my infrequent watering, but would like to try them again sometime as I love cauliflower. When we get back in mid august I can but some effort into improving the soil and then think about what I am going to put in. Space is a bit of an issue as I don't have too much of it, although there is another bit of the garden that would easily be made into another veggie patch and I am really keen to try the gourds this year too.
I have always had herbs in the garden, use them nearly every day, but have now put more of these into tubs to make room for the veggies, so better be a more vigilant waterer this year LOL.
We're having a couple of lovely sunny days down here, but windy.
    Cheers

  • I'm in the Newcastle area, maybe I've just become too acclimatised to Australian weather LOL, but find it decidedly chilly here at the moment. I have some cabbages and spinach that are starting to grow pretty well that I planted a couple of weeks ago in my new bed.
How much further North are you?
    Cheers

  • Thanks Katherine, I'm looking forward to the warmer weather to start some serious planting :)
  • ask a silly question. get a very in depth answer.. that was awesome, thanks kat.. im at work right now and am looking forward to being able to run out to the tracks and pick some fruit instead of eating all these lollies. at this rate ill be needing tooth fillings on a weekly bases.
(maybe ooooby will become the new comms book?) ha
  • hey katharine.. sounds like a yummy garden.. whats comfrey?
  • Hi Katherine.

Thanks for the comment on Garden guardians on the book group. I tried looking it up on Amazon but no joy, can you give us a link to it please?
  • Thanks for the grasshopper gourmet suggestion.
The cold is putting me off torchlit night investigating lately but I think it's a good idea.
I hope they'll leave me enough to eat!
  • Hi Katherine.Welcome to Ooooby. Thanks for you comments on the 'organics is not enough' question. I've learnt more by reading the references you suggest.
    Very inspiring.
