  • Check Council bylaws - beekeeping is usually found under bylaws that govern the keeping of animals.

    If you live in the old Auckland City area, the specific bylaw is found here: bylaw

    The specific part of this bylaw relating to bees states:

    3.4 Bee-keeping

    3.4.1

    Every person keeping bees or causing or permitting bees to be kept on private property must ensure that:

    1. the bees are not kept in such conditions or sited in such a way as to create or be likely to create a nuisance to any person;
    2. that where there is more than one beehive kept on private property in an urban area the consent of an authorised officer has been obtained.

     So, you are permitted to keep beehives as of right, provided the two conditions stated in the bylaw are followed. Please note that this applies to people living in the old Auckland City area only.

    Other areas (Manukau, Waitakere, North Shore etc) had different requirements so you will need to check these out. From what I understand, North Shore city had more stringent and restrictive requirements.

    The new Auckland Council will be reviewing bylaws next year so that one bylaw will apply to the whole region, so it will pay to keep an eye on the review of this part of bylaw. Hopefully the bylaw governing the keeping of bees will not be made more restrictive.

  • In Auckland best thing is to visit:www.aucklandbeekeepersclub.org.nz they will let you know everything you need to know also all hives must be legally registered with http://www.nba.org.nz

    What part of Auckland are you in?

    • Thanks for that will contact them i live in rodney hbc
  • In Hamilton where I live Anthea there are no legal rules except if the hive becomes a nuisance it would have to be shifted, by that I mean, if your neighbours complained about being stung or their pets !
    Check out with your local council, this can be done on-line. I do know that Waihi will not allow hives in the town area, most places are ok.
    If you live in the Waikato drop me a line about renting hives, there is a chap in Auckland who does it, his nmae is Kerry Mc C urdy of Beez Thingz ph 09-6223055 or on line at beezthingz.co.nz
  • Check your District Plan / Council website. Different areas have different rules about critters in urbania :)
  • Most councils allow you to have up to two hives in an urban area, Just inform your neighbours and place in a position so the bees flight path is not crossing near peoples accessways. There are a few company's that do rent out hives and will fully maintain them for you and share honey.

    Please visit a new Charitable Trust called Save Our Bees ( just launched today ) here is the link. I hope the information there is useful to you.
