MILK AND JUICE BOTTLES

Milk and juice bottles sure have a place in the garden. I've seen people use water filled milk jugs as weights to hold down row covers and train branches of fruit trees. Here's a few other great ideas.

You can buy those fancy water filled garden cloches but water jugs work just fine too. Not only does this insulate your plants but it keeps water handy if you need it.

Juice bottles make wonderful plant containers.

  • We have a lot of chlorine in our local water, so I fill the bottles with tap water and keep uncapped for 24-48 hours...the chlorine has a chance to dissipate into the air, and the water is safe for container plants, indoor houseplants, and even my orchids. At any one time, I have maybe 15 bottles filled and ready to use...I also have approximatley 85 houseplants.
    • 85 houseplants! It's a jungle at your house! Gyda, I've read in many books that water should sit for a bit before giving to all plants. I'm now keeping 5 gallon containers out in the yard. It's fun to watch the birds and deer at them too.
    • Yes, 85 houseplants...everything from palm and ficus trees down to miniature orchids...they are really healthy for your house. Another good thing about using the bottles is that the water is room temperature and doesn't shock your plants. Yes, the birds especially love water...I have five birdbaths at different heights...the robins, doves, and quail prefer something at ground level, and finches, etc., like something higher up. I love the wildlife, even though some of them do some damage...deer.
  • I love the idea that Pacific NW slugs would be almost completely foiled. (Might need just a bit of fireplace ash or something where the fence meets the ground to completely foil them.)
    • Great idea Harry! If you use those metal shelf supports to attach the bamboo poles too, then you can wrap the support ends that are attached to the fence with copper. Just this morning I was contemplating my next years battle with those guys!
  • I love the strawberry container from juice bottles. Support would need to be strong though. I love the vertical gardening ideas that I am getting. Some of which will be used in the basement garden under lights. It seems that having some up a wall would be fun.
  • Love those strawberry planters - more vertical gardening!
