  • My chickens love to eat shield bugs so I let them do their thing in the evening just before bed every couple of days (after I have picked ripe fruit and veges and protected any really vulnerable crops). That way they are not awake long enough to do much damage to other crops and only take a few of the ripening fruit on the tomatoes...doesn't deal with the bug eggs but turns shield bugs in chicken eggs!

I also have my producing plants in different places in the garden so there is less chance of an infestation wiping out the lot. Seems to work, and I am the first to admit that I am not the most active mother of my garden :)
  • i'd not heard of Neem Oil before now so did some checking and found this.
    http://www.suntec.co.nz/neemlabel250.pdf
the label on this says not to use on food producing plants.
those are the plants that need help with insects sometimes.
flowers i grow for the visual effect,
so the bugs dont worry me so much.
i cant imagine how you'd wash any food to get the oil off....soap? hmmmm.
  • If you spray food plants with Neem Oil, is the food then edible or do you have to wash it in some special way?
  • I'm not sure how to get rid of the eggs but I do know that if you spray with Neem Oil that this will stop bugs from breeding in their next cycle. i.e. you won't kill these ones but you will prevent them from breeding.
  • Hi Amy! I would love to know what the eggs look like - have seen a few different eggs lately and I get paranoid they might be beneficial!
