  • Hello all, I have just started in a new role with Auckland Council's Northern Community Development Team. One of the areas I'm interested in, with particular relevance to the North Shore, is what more council can do to support community gardens and the area's Transition Town initiatives. I've been involved in Devonport Transition Town for the last couple of years as well as the Ngataringa Organic Garden for the last year or so. It's an area I'm hugely passionate about so if you have some ideas or questions then please do fire off an email to me at: stephen.mcluckie@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

    Cheers, Steve

  • Hi everyone, I am new to the area and also new to the forum.

Currently I am organising a community project called" sustainable gardening for everyone". Gardening and sustainable living is something that important to me and perhaps many others. But not all will be able to have their own garden by themselves (don't know how to do it, can't do it alone, don't have enough tools etc, the list will go on). Food prices are going up so having this done will save people a lot of money. Also doing it together will be fun.

So this is where the project comes in, finding and putting a group of people together, who want to have their own garden, and for one reason or another haven't got it. The group will then go around to each other's place and build the gardens together, one at a time.

I have got some support from Bunnings as well in term of training and buying in bulk.

If any of you are interested, or know someone who may be interested, please let them know. You can contact me through Ooooby or at facebook.co.nz/NZGardening, or send me an email: doyle.trinh@gmail.com

    Thanks, Doyle.

  • Hi everyone,

Just putting the word out that an exciting new Ecofestival for the North Shore is happening in March 2013, and wondered if any of you would like to be involved, or know people who would.  In a nutshell, for the whole month of March the Shore will be buzzing with a varied programme of events - workshops, open-days, tours, displays, talks, walks and more - to showcase sustainability on the North Shore, and inspire people to live more sustainably.  It is supported by Auckland Council, and is being run by the Kaipatiki Project Environment Centre.  There are many ways you can get involved - by running an event during March, by becoming a sponsor (cash, skills or products all very welcome), or by helping with advertising. It would be fantastic to see the profile of Oooby being raised, and a perfect opportunity to get more people involved.

You can contact me through Oooby, or on 482 1172 or 020 4000 4788 if you would like more info.

    Thanks, Louisa.

  • Hi all,

Small correction to my request for the Cedar Centre Community Garden in Beach Haven. The correct date when we'll need help with the garden is Sat November 24th from 9:30-12pm @ 52 Tramway Rd. We'll be clearing paths and laying down carpet and mulch. Refreshments provided.

We are actively looking for community involvement in the garden and also an experienced gardener to be on our management committee. If interested in either, please post a message here or contact me on

    027-2563010

    Thanks!

My Kumara Exsperiment

I have tried Kumara before and did not have much luck. This time I dug all the soil out and replaced it with a 50/50 mix of sand and old garden mix on a clay base. The Kumera themselves are of Kohunga stock.    But aren’t the vines supposed to have died back by now? Shouldn’t I have harvested them already? Or is it just this mild Autumn?Kumara Beds in March.jpg
