Dog poop

As the owner of two dogs, was intrigued to learn that Earl has been using his worms to process dog poop - except after the dogs have been wormed. Much more environmentally sound than bagging and binning it. Have been thinking about alternative means of disposal and considered using bokashi activator http://www.bokashi.co.nz/testimonials/wastemanagement.htm but a worm farm will be much simpler, so off to order another worm farm from Mick at https://ooooby.ning.com/profile/EasyVeg?xg_source=activity

  • I just built a worm tower and planted it next to a tree in my backyard.  It will feed the tree and help improve the soil around it.   As long as you do not place it near anything edible.

Here is a short video on making a worm tower.

    • This is a great idea.  Thanks.
  • Hi everyone
Just wondering how long worming tablets will stay in a dogs system for.
I've had my worm farm for one month now so am a complete beginner.

    • Hello Jools, sorry I missed your question til now. I usually withhold the dog poo for a week after they've been wormed but confess that I've occasionally forgotten to withhold and not managed to kill off all my worms - there must have been a few casualties but not enough to make a huge impact on the farm.
    • Cheers Megan.
  • New home ... no worm farm yet, but got my composter up and running much to the joy of little birdies that are learning to hunt for themselves. (North America) I am going to have two worm bins going by New Years but for right now I am just going to bury it by the composter.
  • Hi! I'm an avid (new) worm farmer and I put all the poo from our meat-eaters (cats and dog) into one (big) farm and use that juice for our non-edible gardens - everything else goes in our other farm and that juice goes on our edible crops. I'm the same - I get all sorts of weird looks from people when I tell them about recycling poos but they're all amazed to know that healthy farms don't smell and I've even managed to convert some of them and set them up with homemade farms and worms - all for FREE!
  • Can you do the same with cat poo?
    • have you set up a cat poo worm farm yet Iona? My dog one is thriving, emptying the contents of the vacuum cleaner in it too, lots and lots of dog hair - we have a long haired collie springer cross and a short haired bitsa - lab, springer, brittany cross and they both shed like crazy. great as an insulation layer and the worms are eating it too.
    • I understand about having a dog that is a hair factory. My Dusty's mother was a Newfoundland but her father was a border collie/chow chow cross.... if I don't keep up with it there will be hair two inches deep on the floors.
