Fruit flies

Is there anything that can be done with respect to reducing the number of fruit flies that the worm farm appears to have attracted at the moment. The worms are fine and doing the job, it would just make the task of adding stuff to it more pleasant if not surrounded by a swarm of flies when I lift the lid.

The whole garden has a lot of fruit flies (must be something to do with rather good crop of peaches and pears), so any tips with respect to reducing the numbers would be useful for the future.

Cheers

  • Hiya David,

just add heaps of paper & some lime & have a wee dig around to mix it all up. You should be about 70% paper to the food scraps. Are you draining the bottom of the box regularly? This makes a difference in mine. Don't know about garden fruit flies except pick up the windfall fruit.

    • Thanks, I suspect my paper to scraps ratio is a bit out at the moment. I will get the shredder out tomorrow and get some paper in to the mix.  I do need to pick up some lime as well for it. Are we talking any old lime that I might be able to get in a garden centre?
    • Hiya David,

Lime helps them digest the 'food' better. I put a handful in about once a week, just scatter over the top when i'm putting food in. I use garden lime, but buy it from a farmstore - you can get 25kg for around the same price you will pay for a 8kg bag at Mitre 10. Some people like to use dolomite. Make sure you drain the liquid off regularly & if your worm box is outside in the weather put something over the ventalation holes. like carpet, so the rain doesn't get in so easily. I always drain mine after rain anyway. That should fix most problems. Good luck. Vermicast & worm wee are wonderful things - rocket fuel for your garden.

    • Hi Kirsty, The handful of lime you are talking about, what size WF is it going into? this could be too much in a small WF maybe.

    • Thanks Kirsty, fruit fly numbers are completely down now and the worms seem even happier.
