Read more…I am transferring from a home-made worm composting system using multiple 20 litre plastic buckets to a 3-tier worm farm I have just bought. I have a lot more compost worms than I need for the new system and would like to give some to a suitable person in exchange for their help transferring from the old system to the new one.

Wow, Nelson, it sounds like you have the jump on me! I've been rebuilding the garden beds here in my rented place (and discovering the hideous things the previous people dumped in the compost!), moving the silverbeet into the new garden beds, moving my perennials that I struck from cuttings and which have now developed good roots in the nursery bed, and sowing seeds that I keep protected in my covered porch to germinate. My spring bulbs have done well this year - the daffs are just finishing, but the tulips are powering on at the moment. I'm a really keen fruit and vege gardener. I used to have a super cottage-style flower garden when I lived in Taranaki, and I miss it. When I get a more permanent home, I'll be working on my "ideal" garden once again.
Hi everyone in Hawkes Bay.Presently I'm excited about my strawberry plant propagation results from last summer. The young plants are being nurtured in separate containers under plastic, and seem very healthy.Im feeding them home prepared kelp and wood ash fertiliser in diluted rainwater solution, and about mid September I'll allow the plants to grow strawberries.Up until then i will pluck out all flowers to once again encourage crown development so I can have better strawberry and runner production later in the growing season.By doing this , I managed to propagate about 5 -6 runner plants from each of the 8 plants I bought! I have also blackjack corgette seedlings with at least the first 2-3 leaf developed because I propagated them inside those clear plastic bins often bought for storing items such as unseasonal clothes.Theyre ideal as mini green houses !I also discovered at Cornecopea health food shop in Heretaunga Str. Hastings a range of Heretage,Heirloom seeds supplied by "Koanga Gardens".Theyre based in Wairoa I believe and are therefore quite local to us in Hawkes Bay!.I'm not really an accomplished veg grower, but I'm going to try my hand at growing heritage Beetroot and heritatage carrots, corvettes, and cucumbers in containers this spring using compost derived from months and months of the leaves, and grass clippings I've layered down around my fruit trees to improve my native soil.Probably as good as any compost container mix I can buy, and it's free,a big step for me in going as "sustainable" as possible!
Can anyone from the Hawkes Bay Ooooby group contact me for gardening fellowship?Nelson Wong
If anyone is interested in Urtica dioica, I have quite a bit of it available for free to anyone that will come and get it. I'm in the Poukawa Hawkes Bay area... 25min out of Hastings.
Any vege people here? We've just finalised details for an exciting event aimed and Hawkes Bay Vegetarians & Vegans! Please pass on to any vege people you may know as well :)

Hi everyone. I am looking for some help please. IN my last place, I didn't have lawns to speak of, so my lawnmower was dormant for nearly 4 years. It was well covered and kept dry. Since moving to Waipukurau earlier this year, I have cleaned the mower, cleaned the spark plug, re-oiled and re-fuelled, but sadly I cannot get it started. The last time it was used, it went absolutely fine. I think it possibly is in need of a service, but unfortunately, I cannot afford that. Is there anyone who may be able to help me please? My lawns are desperate!
I have an abundance of quince available to share
as we have had to trim the tree in order to save it from toppling over, due to poor pruning! If you would like some - we are in Morere, Northern Hawkes Bay...let me know...
