Broody Hen

Hiya, my hen has been brooding about 6 weeks now and though I tried to stop her from the beginning nothing worked. I am starting to wonder if she will ever leave the nest. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  • Well some great advice given by all. I did 3 days in a cage (another one went broody) and now they are swanning (henning) around outside and no longer nesting. Phew. Thanks all
  • Hi Gail, out top hen gets broody regularly, she has just finished a 2 month no lay period. I don't do anything apart from move her off the eggs she sits on from the other hens & try & get her to go outside. We have 3 others that lay so we have enough eggs for the 4 of us. I have never tried to put them on a cage or anything as I also feel too mean.
    • I had a thought this week that someone should invent a little thingy that chirps like a new born chick and wriggles about that you could put under a clucky hen to make her think the chickies have hatched. As soon as they hear the noise they snap out of it, then it would be easier to get them to go on with life.
  • Thanks Daniel, I did the wire cage thing but I felt so mean, I stopped after a day. I might try it for longer this time.
  • Hi, yep we had a broody bantam. We had to put her in solitary confinement. it sounds mean but it works. We put her is a wire cage on her own with just food and water no bedding or anything else. put the cage up on some bricks or something so she can't get comfy. We kepted her there for about 3 days and now she is fine and back with the others. she hasn't started laying yet thou. still got our fingers crossed. Good luck
