Chook going odd? about to start laying?

For the last 2 days "Fireman Sam" (thats what happens when a 4yr old boy names the chooks), has been going nuts for 4 or 5 hours at a time then just settles down and chooks around normally.

When she goes nuts, shes in the nesting box pulling all the wood shavings out, and trying to dig through the floor, then jogs out of the nesting box, looking a touch bow legged, then jogs back in, more demolition, then all goes quiet for 20 mins or so, then more bashing and thumping and bedding biffing, rinse and repeat a few times and then after a few hours goes back to normal, shes done this today and yesterday. and when shes fine, shes utterly normal.

any ideas

  • Hmmmmmmmmm, well Elvis won't be laying, HE just started crowing and now looking at him he looks like a cockerel (bugger).

Anyway how long between first and second eggs, is it a few days, weeks or just when ever she feels like it

    • Talking to myself here, Fireman Sam must have been reading the thread, as she popped out another egg, in the middle of the run again, after again pulling 90% of the bedding wood shaving out again, ( Cheers for the additional shaving Daniel, the rate this chook is going through stuff I'll be starting my own mill soon)
    • Ha ha - yes they can be messy, my chooks lay anywhere but the laying box!
    • I had the problem of my chooks laying anywhere but the nesting box, so I got a couple of old golf balls and put them in the nesting box and they always lay there now, even after I have taken the golf balls out.
  • Fireman Sam has laid an egg, a tiny tiny tiny little egg, and right in the middle of the run, but an egg nonetheless.

Still waiting on Elvis and Penny to start laying.

  • well if she hasn't started laying its more likely she's just getting ready to

  • Sounds like she might be going broody. Getting a nest ready. ??
    • oh bugger thats really not what i was wanting to hear as she hasn't even started laying yet,

Oh well might give it a few days and see if the dunking in cold water methods shifts it, if it is broodiness
