How do I stop hens squawking so early in the morning

Hi, my young girls have just starting laying. The first ones were laying about 10am and then making noises about it. Now one more has started laying but at 5am and making a racket, and the rest have all decided to get in on the early morning laying and subsequent noise making. I am worried my neighbours will complain to the council. How do I get them to lay later or at least be quiet about it!! It sounds impossible I think!!

  • Well I passed some eggs over the fence, and apologised for the early morning noise, and guess what, the hens heard me, and stopped making their early morning fuss! Go figure!!!
  • I find most of the squawking (apart from the "Hey everybody, I just laid an egg!!!" bit) seems to be because they all want to use a particular nestbox, no matter how many you supply. Mind you, my lot stopped laying a month ago because they're all moulting and they've gotten very quiet now ;)
  • Do you think Your neighbours would complain about the chickens if you invited them for eggs on toast once a week.
  • Hi there. Have you tried locking them in their pen in the dark until, say 7am?
