Insulated hen house

Hiya, I'm in the thinking stage, action later in the year, but was wondering if I built an insulated hen house, using say the wool insulation that people use in their people houses, would that potentially harbour mites or lice? I would line the interior of course, any ideas about potential issues? I'm planning to have the house bit off the ground, with the run under and around that. I've learn't heaps from reading you guys discussions, it's awesome!

  • Hi

Let me know what did you do.

Actually I want to have a place to put my chooks, ducks cats together in order to keep them warm

Also, I want to have plants around the area, if it is possible in a greenhouse, so they will keep warmer the plants.

I know that there are some designs on that, but I couldnt see a good one.

    • Hiya Ricardo,

Still in the sorting out stage at present. i have a hilly section which has no fences, so need to design a house off the ground with a dog-proof fence. The last woman who lived here lost a few chooks to dogs (I live by a public walkway). i figure I have until Sept to figure out all my tricky bits then just do it....I wanted to insulate the chicken house so they stay warm in the winter & cooler in the winter.

Has anyone built a house on a slope? I've googled it & seems tricky, but it must be possible. The dogproofing seems to be limited to fencing and an electric fence...

I have seen articles in really old "Mother Earth" catalogues about building a green house on the side of human houses. i think I read something recently in Kay Baxters book "what's happening in the garden" about back to back greenhouse & chook house. No plans, just a picture. It's in waitakere libraries...

Are you looking at keeping your ducks & other animals in an orchard area or free ranging?

  • Hi I have a converted shed which i line with cardboard and replace when i need to. I love it as i write funny things all on it like who sleeps where etc. all recycble pick up from paper chase.
  • Sorry to hear the email bounced back.  We've been having major technical issues with our email lately.  Looking forward to hearing from you.
  • Do you need the extra insulation where you live? Just an air gap might do. Anyway the important thing is to avoid crevasses and other places spiders and mites can make their homes in and be hard to extricate them from. Use RTV sealant on the interior joins, is my advice, and regularly clean it out.
    • Thanks for the tips Brian, will keep them in mind. i guess i just want my chooks to be as warm as possible. Feels a bit mean to leave them out in an uninsulated shed when i wouldn't live like that...( I know they are chickens but it appears i might be a woos) Did you find some grass to mow/ harvest? I live in Titirangi & have neighbours who don't mow their grass. the woman who used to own my house used to pay a guy to mow it, but i stopped that when i moved in. Is Titirangi close enough for you? Want me to ask them if it's ok? they are fairly relaxed....
    • Hi Kirsty, I was just avoiding work when I read your note here! Thanks for the lawn offer. Yes Titirangi is perfect! I'll contact you. Brian
  • Hi Kirsty,  wool insulation is typically treated with insecticide.
    • Thanks Suzie, I forgot about the insecticide! I tried emailing you @ work but it bounced back. Will try ringing next week & get the right one off you. Hope your chooks all good & happy.
