Can anyone recommend a good Chicken feeder?

There is lots of competition for food around our way (Glen Eden) from ducks and other bird. No sign of any rats though, which could be one benefit of living next door to a cat hoarder. We are tired of Blackie (Langshans) and Rockie (Barred Plymouth Rock) coming to the back door and clucking for food at 6.00 am. It is time they made their own breakfast and a Chicken Feeder would allow self-service. Any other ideas would be welcome too.

  • I have used a Grandpa's Chook feeder for a number of years and it's been fantastic. They aren't cheap but are definitely worth it. It looks like the Chooketeria is based on this one, but the Grandpa's feeder is made of galvanised metal so would be longer lasting, I think. I am a bit scungy, so usually go for the cheaper product, but in this case, I would buy this type again, rather than wood. The only part on mine that is wearing out after about 8 years, is the bit they stand on, which in the older model was made of wood - plywood in fact, like the whole of the Chooketeria.
  • Chooketeria is lovely-a Rolls Royce of chicken feeders.

I think my wife is getting me a Chooketeria for Christmas, which, like the one you recommended, Hester, is also sold on Trademe (follow link below).

  • Brian, since we live close to each other I was wondering if you were interested in doing a Chicken-sitting deal. If you are away for any length of time I would visit you Chickens daily to check on them, in return for you doing the same. In particular we are going camping for the last week of January.

  • Sounds like a scheme, Matthew. One that I might think of doing too.

What are your requirements of a feeder?
Obviously you could go and buy one from chookin.co.nz or similar, but maybe you're thinking of something specific, like chicken-sized frypans for the bacon and eggs?

    Cheers

  • I recently bought one off trademe-here is the link http://www.trademe.co.nz/Business-farming-industry/Farming-forestry...
This is a hanging feeder so it keeps the food clean and holds enough for about a week for 4 chooks. We are happy with it and it was reasonably priced.
