Does anyone else mince their worm food?

For a while now we have been putting our worm food in our food processor and feeding the result to the worms. They love it, but with two of us in the household, we can't feed them enough. Soil builds up in the bottom layer and is ready to use before we have filled the top layer. Hence I have one tray just lying on the ground. Solutions would be to get neighbours to contribute food and maybe we will do this over the Christmas period. The only problem comes when we have visitors who view our food processor with horror...

  • We used to but as we have 5 large bathtub farms ( we sell tiger worms ) it takes too long. Now just dump everything into a large fish bin and chop up with old pair of hedge clippers. Have posted a video about this.
  • Hi Diedre,

I have recently started to put the food scraps through my juicer (my juicer can handle it) and have noticed how much my worms are loving it. They seem to have a real party as I have never before seen so many active worms wriggling in the most top layer of the bin. I am pretty sure that your food procesor does help the worms in digesting the foods and am sure they would love more of the yummy stuff, be it from neighbours or friends :). Silja
    • Yes we have tons of worms and use the processor only when we have a lot of food for them to go thru. They do love it. In the winter when they eat less I freeze the food in 1 gallon reused bags. then let it thaw a few days later or weeks later.
Truth is worms wont touch the food until it starts to break down. So you could put celery in there but until its gets mushy they will go around it. the processor and freezing helps break it down so they can munch faster.
  • Hi I was told by a guy in the USA many years ago to freeze scraps and then defrost fully then feed them to the worms. The freezing breaks down the cell walls ready for the worms to eat. Might be easier than mincing it.Angie
  • I chop up our harder veggie scraps with scissors as i'm adding them to the Can-O-Worms....banana skins and similar so there is more surface area for the bacteria to work on. But I don't bother with softer scraps and they seem to be dissapearing pretty quickly. That said we've not had ours up and running very long and haven't added the next tray yet. I have added some grated carrott scraps that still seem to be sitting there a while later though......
  • hello Deirdre, what a good idea, I've been labouriously chopping up the scraps manually. The food processor makes much more sense. The smaller particles would make the scraps more accessible to the worms as it would decompose more quickly. Maybe you should befriend a local cafe and leave an icecream tub with them for daily collection, your worms would have more than enough food - you could probably start another bin! Will definitely throw our next lot of scraps into our food processor.
  • Hi Diedre,
we don't process the food we give our worms, but sounds interesting, I figure they like to break the food down,
    Kate
