Kaipara Flats Harvest Festival at Kotare Lodge, Kaipara Flats, Warkworth

March 10, 2012 from 2pm to 9pm
They are looking for stalls for the festival, might be a good opportunity for Ooooby gardeners to on-sell extra produce, or we could do an Ooooby information/produce group stall?  I'll be there with my band, The Pipi Pickers playing two sets either side of dinner time.  Come on along!See More

Jenine Abarbanel replied to Samantha Freeman's discussion What is the best low cost Mulch in the group Food Growing Q&A
"The best mulch can be had for free, if you are willing to drive to Snells Beach (near Warkworth, north of Auckland).  After easterly storms, the beach there is covered in seagrass, which is fine like confetti.  I have never seen such…"

Jenine Abarbanel replied to Abbie Reynolds's discussion Source of good manure... in the group Food Growing Q&A
"If you fancy a drive up to Warkworth, Mahurangi Duck sells wood shavings saturated with duck manure which I have found to be absolutely MAGIC in the garden.  I bring a trailer and they load it with a back hoe, $38.  Alternately, you could…"

My beloved chickens

I'm spending a lot of time handling the chickens at the moment.  My favourite, a half bantam, half something else speckled red hen named Grace has come down with scaly leg mites.  We noticed a limp about a week or so ago.  By today she could hardly walk at all.  I've put her in a cage and coated her legs in vaseline.  I'll keep doing this every day, and dip her legs in rubbing alcohol once a week, until she gets better.  She hates being caged, my Grace.  She's a stubborn, independent,…See More

"I hardly use my slow cooker.  Only when I need extra cooking capacity, really. A big pot on the stove gets me pretty much the same result. The most useful piece of equipment in my kitchen is my Magimix Compact food processor.  It seemed…"

Tell us about your garden and what you're growing
On our half acre section, we've got about 100m2 of garden producing reasonable amounts of kitchen produce. I would love to have people to ask questions of when things go wrong. We grow a lot of chillies and I make salsa and chilli sauces. We always have more chillies than we need. We also have a small flock of hens who don't lay enough eggs.
I have a lot of very productive feijoa and red guava trees. Figs looking good this year, too.

My letter to Kate Wilkinson

To the Hon. Ms. K. Wilkinson, MP.

I am concerned that the new Food Bill will limit the access to affordable healthy foods from small-volume local producers. I have read everything I can find on the subject, including as much of the Bill itself as I could manage, the proposed amendments, and various analyses, and I remain unhappy about the effect it will have on small growers and producers.

Nearly one in three New Zealanders are obese.…
