Kate Jury replied to Jane Maarie's discussion How many months does kumara need to stay in the ground before harvest? in the group Food Growing Q&A
"Great to hear how you used the horse manure to break down the clay soil Jane.  I am sure you will get something out from under them - just don't be put off if some of them have dark mottling on the skin - mine were like that the first year…"

Kate Jury replied to Jane Maarie's discussion How many months does kumara need to stay in the ground before harvest? in the group Food Growing Q&A
"Interesting Richard, although I'm not sure about the heavy clay soils - in my experience this type of soil tends to cause virus/fungal infections which show up on the skin of the kumara.  they generally prefer good free-draining soil with…"

Kate Jury replied to Jane Maarie's discussion How many months does kumara need to stay in the ground before harvest? in the group Food Growing Q&A
"Hi there, from experience I would wait at least another month before checking them again.  Generally kumara take around 5 months, sometimes slightly less if the growing conditions are good.  I planted mine in Nov 2011 as well, and the tops…"

"Hi Michael, Calico, muslin or just a plain screw-top left on a bit looser is fine - not sure why I said it had to be airtight, as if your bug is weak then it could probably do with some natural yeasts from the air.  Mine is going really…"

My natural garden

I happened to find myself at a market gardening business the other day.  Was astounded at the almost complete absence of life there - apart from a few sparrows and a couple of minah birds, the place was deadly quiet.  Was quite a creepy feeling, as I stood there thinking about my own garden, which absolutely hums with all kinds of insects, and birds, skinks etc.  Really made me think about how other people live....See More

"Hi Michael (& everyone else), No, I definitely don't add any more sultanas, works absolutely fine with just sugar added for food.  You will find that after a few weeks the sultanas cease to be recognisable anyway - the…"

Hi KAte

Welcome.

What are you going to do on Sunday 22 at 1030? NEver asked that question to a person I dont know.

There is a working bee in my house in Mangere

http://ooooby.ning.com/group/workingbeesauckland

The idea is to make a group that should rotate place, first in my house, then somebody else, perhaps yours one day and make the work more efficient.

Even if you dont come sign in Working Bees Auckland Group.

Bye, nice to meet you.
