The best of british

Funny what you remember when you busy yourself in a garden, on a cold Sunday, prepping things for the arrival of spring. Hauling out a clump of weeds from the raised bed, I suddenly remembered an event from 1983 and burst out laughing. My wife - and my dog - looked at me, strange. I recounted the reason for the mirth, but only the dog really listened. (My wife hated name-dropping, but for this yarn, there is no avoiding it.)Working in the advertising industry back in the day when the industry…See More

Back to nature in the Sounds

Things happen in 3's. Well, they definitely did at an outdoor wedding weekend in The Marlborough Sounds.1. In the middle of cousin's wedding vows I feel something on my head, brush it and get stung on the hand by.. well, by something. I shout out something like 'yikes' (but it rhymed with 'truck') which didn't go down too well with some of the audience.2. Hand quite swollen, lean it on back of chair to show someone and a Weka darts out of the forest above the chair and bites me on the finger. I…See More

Sax players always get the girls

I was at a little club/restaurant in Sydney called 'Soup Plus' this one time. A jazz club, that offered the most stunning array of soups produced from their own vege gardens. This particular evening we had arrived early; it was kinda quiet and this dude at the next table casually gets out a case, pulls out a sax and plays 'Memories'.He plays it really, really well.It was kind of cool, given he was a patron and that it was all so spontaneous. I'll bet the farm he got the girls that night. So,…See More

My dad was a great gardener; my God, could he ever grow tomatoes. His put my efforts to shame. When I was 14 years old, he went from 20/20 vision to being blind. Just like that. We learned later that he had suffered a degenerative syndrome but it had no warning symptoms. This was the early 70's; if he were alive today, it would have been picked up and he would never have gone blind. It had an enormous impact on our family, obviously. He went from a great managerial job - which he loved, to…See More

"I had this. Pruning a lot of the non-flowering and lower stems and all dry leaves and watering heaps (mornings only) and upping feeding to twice weekly helped a lot. Good luck. Tomatoes can be hard work. Chur."

Already done - I mentioned I wanted to grow some to Chris, and he's taken some cuttings. I'm sure he'll be able to spare some for you! :)
